Conventions of a Music video

Rihanna - We found love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tg00YEETFzg&ob=av2e

This music video shows various different shots in various different locations, portraying a story. Each shot will be shown for about two seconds maximum before it is changed. This goes with the song because it is fast moving. Even though there are many cuts and shots taken each image that is shown, shows and tells a story.

Screenshots of different parts of the video:

  1. This image is narrative because it tells the audience how they're feeling through the intensity of the look in their eyes and their body language. It shows two people that do not look happy with each other for example, Rihanna's arms are crossed implying that she doesn't really want to talk or be near the guy. This image is a two shot simply because two people are in the shot.
  2. On the other hand this image shows that they're really into each other because of their body language, its very open and welcoming. It shows that they're having a good time but also shows insecurities because of the intake of drugs, this is shown through the droopiness of Rihanna's hand, eyes and actions. This is a tracking shot because the camera is following their movements.
  3. Image three and four show that they're generally having a good time at a skating park and buying their groceries. This is a wide shot because it shows their surroundings. It also comes across as if they're rebellious and daring, they're making a mess in a shop by spraying a can everywhere also going on a skate board, on big ramps etc without really knowing how to skate.
  4. Number 5 shows a building collapsing, from standing up striahgt to nothing but rumble. This could symbolise their relationship with each other, it was fine at first but slowly got worse and eventually collapsed to nothing. The image of the building collapsing actaully happened so it could show that its a wake up call that what Rihanna and her boyfriend are doing is real and it'll not only effect themselves but will effect others.
  5. Image six, seven and eight show the breakdown of their relationship, and how they're not coping (espeically Rihanna), this is shown through the facial expressions, body language.
  6. The last photograph shows that she ends up all alone, after everything she went through.

Overall throughout the video and through the images it shows a story, it shows the type of people they are by where they're going, what they're doing and how they dress. Throughout the video Rihanna has very little clothing on and the guy has baggy thin tops and the type of clothing and the way they look is carried out.
There were many different camera shots and angles that were used such as mid, mid close ups, wide, tracking, panning etc.

Chroma Key

Why is Chroma Key used:

This technique used in film, video and still photography to replace a portion of an image with a new image. It is also referred to as color keying, color-separation overlay, greenscreen, and bluescreen.
commonly used to replaced a coloured background with a different setting, for example weather forecast broadcasts.
If the meteorologist wears blue clothes, his clothes will be replaced with the background video. This also works for greenscreens, since blue and green are considered the colors least like skin tone. This technique is also used in the entertainment industry, for example for special effects.
Chroma keys can be done in post-production or in real-time. Television programs such as news and entertainment shows use them a lot.
There are many different reasons to why it is used such as:
  • The location doesn't exist or is not avaible
  • For health and safety reasons
  • To create illusions
  • Cut traveling costs
